It has been a staple of summers at my grandmother\u2019s house for as long as I can remember&#8230; so naturally, I had to bring the littles here on their first visit to the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"http:\/\/lestersworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Dreamland1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"960\" src=\"http:\/\/lestersworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Dreamland1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-120\" srcset=\"http:\/\/lestersworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Dreamland1.jpg 720w, http:\/\/lestersworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Dreamland1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dreamland was founded in 1926, when local grocer J.D. Booth decided a pool was needed, and the wells he used for his ice business could get the job done. Strategically located between Huntington, WV and Ashland, KY, it didn\u2019t take long to establish itself. Although the pool was \u201ccool\u201d, and the largest one east of the Mississippi for its time, it was the three story music pavilion that brought about its early fame. During the 30\u2019s and 40\u2019s many big name acts performed there, to include Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong and Glen Miller, just to name a few. (Due to segregation Armstrong couldn\u2019t get a hotel in the area&#8230; he stayed at the Booth residence, located adjacent to the pool property.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"http:\/\/lestersworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Dreamland2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"389\" src=\"http:\/\/lestersworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Dreamland2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-121\" srcset=\"http:\/\/lestersworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Dreamland2.jpg 624w, http:\/\/lestersworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Dreamland2-300x187.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Long after its heyday, the pavilion would fall victim to teenage arsonists in 1973, and would not be reconstructed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/lestersworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Dreamland3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"637\" src=\"http:\/\/lestersworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Dreamland3-1024x637.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-122\" srcset=\"http:\/\/lestersworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Dreamland3-1024x637.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/lestersworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Dreamland3-300x187.jpg 300w, http:\/\/lestersworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Dreamland3-768x478.jpg 768w, http:\/\/lestersworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Dreamland3-1536x956.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/lestersworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Dreamland3.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But one could argue that, in a sense, the live music would go on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">J.D. Booth\u2019s nephew, who worked at Dreamland until the family sold the business in 1949, would leave the area, as many did, and go on to become a successful businessman and politician.
